Animals in the Military
Bomb dogs are trained to smell the explosive and indicate to
the handler by assuming an unassisted "sit" position.
This helps us as they can provide an indication and a warning of a bomb or an explosion meaning that the Special Forces can take action to provide safety for everyone.
The bomb dogs are kept in kennels with runs as they are used by the police and not used as pets. They are given a reward after finding a bomb and live a good life with good welfare. The dog will be trained for up to 2 years before completing missions.
The bomb dogs are free from hunger and thirst as they are on a daily feeding regime and also are provided with water in their kennel at all times. The dogs are also free from discomfort as they are provided with their own kennel with run, inside with bedding. The dogs are working dogs and therefore do not get play time, but can express normal behaviours in their kennel. When they are not on a job, they practice their skills by training, gaining many rewards if they do so correctly. If they get it wrong they do not get told off they simply get no reaction off the handler, so this is good welfare. The bomb dogs are open to pain and injury as they have a dangerous job of finding bombs, and if one was to go off they can get seriously hurt if not killed which is very bad welfare. Being injured may then go onto cause fear and distress in the dog as they are confused and now also frightened from the bad experience.
