Guard Dog
A guard dog is of an intimidating breed such as a German
Shepherd. Their job is to protects or guard a home, object, a person or a
place.
Guard Dogs help us as they offer protection and in most cases the feeling of safety. If provoked the dogs may also attack someone/something so can deter unwanted people away. The dog may take up to 8 weeks to learn to guard something dependant on the dog.
The Guard Dogs live outside usually in a kennel, but have access to get out the kennel to scare off anyone who intrudes but the dog is usually attached on a chain. The dog will not normally go inside and so will have bedding in its kennel for comfort. They tend not to be treated as a pet as they can be aggressive and are owned to do a job which is protecting and guarding.
A guard dog’s job affects their welfare as they have to live outside at all times which may cause discomfort due to what outside facilities the dog is provided and also the weather conditions at the time. The dog should be provided with water at all times and fed daily on a regime but this again is dependent on the owner whether the dog is free from hunger and thirst. The dog may be put under fear and stress if they are easily provoked, or are not comfortable with the job of protecting something. Also if the dog is very aggressive it may be put under a lot of stress if it does not manage to settle down in its environment which is bad on its welfare. If someone was to try and get past the dog and it chose to attack due to it being a guard dog it may become injured and in pain. Also living outside it may catch diseases dependant on the environment. This making it not free from pain, injury and disease. The guard dog is normally on a long chain to allow warning people away from whatever it is guarding. Also guard dogs are normally in a mind-set meaning it will just focus on guarding something, this causing it to not express normal behaviours such as playing, socialising and grooming itself.
