Marshall Beagels in the Testing of Products and Medical Procedures on Animals
Animal testing is the use of non-human animals in research
and development projects especially for purposes of determining the safety of
substances such as food or drugs.
The role of the beagles is to be tested on with new drugs to ensure that the drugs are safe for human purpose. Also the beagle’s blood is used and sent off for the development of different studies.
The Marshall Beagles help humans as they ensure that a variety of products are safe for human use. The beagles are also being used in the research of bone cancer.
The beagles which were imported from America and Europe to East Yorkshire are kept in a small compound protected by razor wire, CCTV cameras and guards for privacy purposes. The beagles are housed in a modern low-raised building with more than a dozen beagles inside where they are kept in groups of twos and threes in metal cages against the walls. This is bad on the dogs welfare as there is not enough room for them to move about meaning that they are not free from discomfort or free to express normal behaviour. The dogs are not allowed outside what so ever, and so are left to excrete in the tiny shared cages which could cause the spread of disease and also may get in the wounds if the dog has had a reaction to a product causing an infection. This is bad on the dog’s welfare as they are not free from pain, injury and disease. Dogs are let out of their cages to a small area containing just a slide whilst their cage is being cleaned out. The testing on the animals causes fear and distress as they may become in pain and are also in an unnatural environment making the beagles very stressed. Animal testing will cause pain, injury and disease to the animal if their body does not agree with it potentially making the dog very poorly which is bad welfare.
