Horse Eventing
Horses are used for competition purposes in eventing. It is where
a horse and rider competes in three phase’s dressage, show jumping and cross
country. All three phases may be on the same day or it might be over three
days.
Eventing affects the animals welfare in both good and bad ways. On their day to day life they are treat well with forage, water and also a field meaning they can express normal behaviour, are free from hunger and thirst, and are free from discomfort. When the horses are at competition they are put under a lot of pressure which can put stress and fear into their head as some riders can wind the horses up and make them feel very uncomfortable. It is also common that horses gain fatal injuries during the cross country phase as the horses are normally tired as it’s the last phase, and the horses are required to run across land and jump big solid fences. A lot of horses fall over jumps landing on their head and neck causing serious injuries to them. This means that the horses are not always free from pain and injury.
